As a British foreign intelligence officer, Philby met future king Abdulaziz Ibn Saud in 1917, who became a “friend beyond all price”. He travelled extensively in Saudi, converted to Islam and became personal adviser to the then King Abdulaziz. As oil was discovered in 1938 by American geologists, Philby advised King Abdulaziz to grant concession to American oil companies in 1944, much to the dismay of the British who had heavily invested in the House of Saud in the hopes of open access to oil reserves.
